Weekend News Bytes — May 26, 2020

(AmericanProsperity.com) – Over the long holiday weekend, it was revealed that in 2019, the United States was ranked as the best-prepared country to handle a pandemic. The US District Court Judge who refuses to dismiss the Michael Flynn case has hired a high-powered attorney to represent him. On Memorial Day, President Trump spoke at Arlington National Cemetery and Fort McHenry in Baltimore. At the same time, presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden left his cave for the first time in months.

The United States Best Prepared for Pandemic

According to the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security (JHCHS), the Dems have it wrong. In 2019, the US was ranked the best-prepared country in the world to handle a pandemic. The Global Health Security Index was created by the JHCHS and the Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI) to assess and benchmark 195 countries’ abilities to respond to pandemics.

The US index score was 83.5, which isn’t a perfect score. The UK was rated second at 77.9. Researchers said the factors weighing the score down included the risk of social unrest, terrorism, and a lack of confidence in the government.

Judge Sullivan Hires High-Powered Attorney

US District Court Judge Emmet G. Sullivan hired high-powered attorney Beth Wilkinson to represent him, a highly unusual occurrence for a federal judge. The DC Circuit Court of Appeals is expected to hear a case after Sullivan refused to dismiss the proceedings against former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn.

In addition, a retired judge was appointed to argue against the DOJ’s dismissal. Flynn’s attorneys have asked for an emergency petition to the appeals court. They say Sullivan has behaved “egregiously” and overstepped his authority.

Wilkinson has served as an Assistant US Attorney, counsel to the Deputy Attorney General, and prosecutor in the Oklahoma City Bombing case in the 1990s. Additionally, she’s worked on high profile cases for Philip Morris USA, the NFL, Bayer, Microsoft, and more. She has the qualifications, but it doesn’t change the fact that this is unusual behavior.

Trump Remembers Memorial Day

On Monday, President Trump took part in a wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery and gave remarks at Fort McHenry in Baltimore to honor veterans. Baltimore is still under stay at home orders, and the Mayor asked Trump not to attend. The White House responded by saying:

“The brave men and women who have preserved our freedoms for generations did not stay home and the President will not either as he honors their sacrifice by visiting such a historic landmark in our Nation’s history.”

Fort McHenry was pivotal in the War of 1812. It’s the site where Francis Scott Key wrote the poem that later became the iconic anthem The Star-Spangled Banner after the US flag survived a brutal battle on September 13-14, 1814. Trump gave a speech recounting this story.

Joe Biden also made an appearance for the first time since mid-March to lay a wreath at the Delaware Memorial Bridge Veterans Memorial Park. He wore a mask and only spoke briefly.
