Weekend News Bytes — June 8, 2020

(AmericanProsperity.com) – America’s situation continues to remain unstable in the wake of George Floyd’s murder by a Minneapolis police officer. Over the weekend, police departments were under the gun as cities consider scaling back police departments or disbanding them altogether.

Joe Biden secured the nomination to be the Democratic Party’s nominee for president. Yet, that’s not what made the news. Instead, Biden gaffed, again, in an equivalent of Hillary Clinton’s “basket of deplorables” moment.

In Michigan, the state Supreme Court ruled in favor of a small business over the governor’s stay-at-home orders. Finally, a major MSM outlet just hired someone central to the Russian hoax.

Police Departments Threatened with Budget Cuts or Dissolution

From New York City to Los Angeles, cities of all sizes are considering reducing funds or even eliminating police departments altogether as protests continue across the country. In New York City, Mayor Bill de Blasio said he would reduce the NYPD budget, reallocate money for youth services, and institute new reforms to include a task force on racial inclusion.

Los Angeles is also considering a similar plan, as are dozens of cities across the country.

In Minneapolis, where a police officer murdered African-American George Floyd, the city council is promising to dismantle the city’s police department. On Friday, 9 out of 13 council members signed a pledge to dissolve the police department.

Mayor Jacob Frey (D) said he would not support defunding or abolishing the police. However, the city council has a veto-proof majority.

Biden and His “Deplorables” Moment

While accusing President Donald Trump of dividing the country, Joe Biden created some division himself. During a virtual town hall Wednesday night with African-American supporters, it was revealed that Biden may have had his “basket of deplorables” moment the prior weekend.

Biden said America is a “decent” nation but then said, referring to Trump supporters, “10% to 15% of the people out there are just not very good people.”

On Twitter, conservatives erupted over Biden’s statement. Donald Trump Jr. tweeted:

Rep. Doug Collins (R-GA) said Biden’s statement strongly resembled Hillary’s “deplorables” comment and asked what makes 150,000 Georgian’s “not good people.” Even Liberal CNN commentator S.E. Cupp asked what was learned from the “deplorables” fiasco.

Michigan Supreme Court Rules in Favor of Barber

On Friday, the Michigan Supreme Court unanimously ruled in favor of a barber. Karl Manke opened his barbershop, which has been in business 60 years, in May defying Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s (D) stay-at-home orders. The state’s attorney general filed a motion last week to ask the court to find Manke in contempt and force his business to shut down if he did not willingly comply.

In his ruling, Justice David F. Viviano said in his opinion, “One hopes that this great principle — essential to any free society, including ours — will not itself become yet another casualty of COVID-19.”

The state shut down the 77-year-old business owner twice. It’s unclear how the ruling impacts other businesses across the state. However, Whitmer is backing off her implementation of stay-at-home orders and business closures. On June 15, barbershops and salons will be allowed to reopen.

Former FBI Attorney at Center of the Russian Hoax Hired by MSNBC

MSNBC has just made an interesting new addition to its staff. It hired former FBI attorney Lisa Page, who was at the heart of the Russian hoax, as a legal analyst.

In 2017, Page was having an extramarital affair with senior FBI official Peter Strzok. Page and Strzok were text messaging about Trump’s campaign in 201, making disparaging remarks and the famous “insurance policy” statement — referring to how they were going to usurp Trump and voters.

George Washington University Law Professor Jonathan Turley tweeted:

For his part, President Trump tweeted that MSNBC’s hiring of Page is a “total disgrace.”
