US Officials Face Cyberattack

US Officials Face Cyberattack

(AmericanProsperity.com) – American freedom and prosperity are directly linked to our security. That safety is being threatened as of late. Recently, two countries snooped on US officials and healthcare information with their custom malware and phishing attacks.

Iran’s ITG18 Hacks Personal Google Accounts

The Iranian hacking team ITG18, also known as Charming Kitten, successfully entered a US Navy official’s Google account. IBM’s X-Force Iris intelligence unit uncovered this through a large data leak which revealed training videos and other hacking data.

In June, these ITG18 unsuccessfully targeted Trump campaign staff. However, the newly-recovered training videos show extreme skill and speed, revealing to IBM researchers that they’re highly experienced in their field and hoping to grow their team.

The hackers are believed to be a sector of the Iranian government, although they may also be a private group working for it. For over 10 years, cybercrime tensions between Iran and the US have run high, although the January airstrike of Iranian general Soleimani raised the stakes.

COVID-19 Vaccine Information Sought by Cozy Bear

Meanwhile, Russian hacking group APT29, also known as Cozy Bear, targets UK, US, and Canadian healthcare groups in search of information on a COVID-19 vaccine. The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and National Security Agency (NSA) joined forces with Britain and Canadian intelligence forces to condemn the hackers.

The UK’s National Cyber Security Center noticed APT29 scanning the healthcare organizations’ networks searching for an entry point into the database. Countries involved have not disclosed if any data was compromised or stolen.

APT29 targeted the Democratic National Committee (DNC) network in 2016 and is suspected of many other attacks since.

As cyberattacks increase, so does America’s ability to combat them. In 2018, President Trump gave the CIA power to authorize more cyberattacks without needing the White House’s approval. In 2019, the US successfully invaded Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps data targeting oil tankers in the Persian Gulf.

Many attacks against the US are unseen. Thankfully, our intelligence agencies work around the clock to ensure the security of Americans all across the nation.
