Iranian Missile Fire Kills 19 Sailors In Training Exercise

(UnitedVoice.com) – An Iranian warship accidentally fired a missile on one of its own ships on Sunday, killing 19 sailors and injuring 15 more. This marks the second “accidental misfire” this year. Back in January, the Iranian military shot down a Ukrainian airliner, killing all 176 passengers on board.

The Strait of Hormuz is an important chokepoint as an average of $1.2 billion worth of oil — around 20% of the world’s supply — passes through on a daily basis. The incident took place in the Gulf of Oman, which is close to this narrow stretch of water.

The reason for the misfire is unclear. However, over the past several months, tensions between the United States and Iran have grown after Iran-backed militias attacked US forces in Iraq back in January. The US responded with the killing of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani.

Neither President Trump nor the US Navy’s 5th Fleet, which patrols those regions, has not commented on the incident.
