Expert Warns: Don't Bank on a Vaccine Anytime Soon

(UnitedVoice.com) – The coronavirus continues to ravage the country. As states prepare and implement reopening strategies, there’s one question on everyone’s minds: will there be a vaccine soon? According to one expert — don’t count on it this year.

On Sunday, Director of the Center for Health Security of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Dr. Tom Inglesby, spoke at an NBC News “Meet The Press” event. The main topic of discussion — the possibility of a coronavirus vaccine. During his appearance, he revealed there are now “110 vaccine projects going on around the world.” Inglesby stated a 12- to 18-month vaccine timeline would normally be unrealistic, but the “extraordinary circumstances” have made it a possibility.

Recently, Dr. Anthony Fauci voiced his stance regarding the vaccine, almost paralleling Dr. Inglesby’s statement. Fauci stated a vaccine could be developed and approved in the aforementioned timeframe, despite newer vaccines requiring years for approval.

Dr. Gregory Glenn, Novavax president of R&D, is confident the company can produce them, and that they’ll be one of the first distributors of “millions of doses.”

With the race to create a vaccine and over 100 projects in process, it’s anybody’s guess when the actual vaccine will be approved and distributed. We can only hope the 12-18 month timeframe is doable as Americans continue to struggle with the economic fallout of the pandemic.
