(AmericanProsperity.com) – As the economic recovery slows, many lawmakers hope to pass another coronavirus stimulus package to speed it up again. But, the targeted stimulus bill presented by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) failed to get the required number of votes to pass on Thursday, September 10.
The stimulus package would have done the following:
- Reinstated weekly $300 federal unemployment insurance
- Authorized additional small business loans
- Provided funds for education as well as COVID-19 testing and vaccines
It was primarily Senate Democrats who blocked the $300 billion bill in a 52-47 vote, although Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) opposed the bill as well. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) criticized the bill:
The cynical Republican COVID bill was emaciated, inadequate, and designed to fail.
Americans need help now, and Congress needs to respond in a way that meets the nation’s very real and urgent needs.

McConnell, however, spoke with Fox News Anchor Dana Perino about the Republican’s attempt to aid the American people:
ICYMI I joined @DanaPerino to discuss Speaker Pelosi & Leader Schumer's continued efforts to block coronavirus relief funding for Americans.
Every Senator who voted against relief needs to answer what in the proposal they actually disagreed with. Kids? Jobs? Healthcare? pic.twitter.com/iuGc7fN01A

While the Senate continues to struggle to pass another stimulus bill before the election, many Americans struggle to make ends meet. Hopefully, lawmakers can find a way to agree on some sort of plan in the coming weeks, but even that dream grows dim.
